Their bilateral meetings have become rare since the start of the war between kyiv and Moscow. Federal Councilor Ignazio Cassis discussed the World Peace Summit in Ukraine with his Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov on Tuesday in New York.
“This meeting was aimed at establishing a dialogue” to assess which path is possible with Moscow, the head of the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs (FDFA) told the press in the evening. “We are at the start of these exploratory discussions”, after Switzerland committed last week to organizing the Summit desired by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.
Mr. Cassis repeats that “the positions are diametrically different” between the two parties. The Ukrainian peace plan brings together conditions that are unacceptable for Moscow and those of Russia would not be unacceptable for kyiv either.
