Incident happened on “Day of Cultures”

Pierre-Antoine Preti from the Department of Education and Youth of the Canton of Geneva confirms the incident on request: “We are aware that this incident occurred on the ‘Cycle d’orientation du Renard’,” he says on request. The students who attend this school are between 12 and 15 years old.

The incident happened on a “Day of Cultures”. “The idea for this day came from the students themselves,” says Preti. A student who has no Serbian roots himself came to the school with a Serbian flag. “Students with a Kosovar background snatched the boy’s flag in the playground and trampled on it.” The whole thing took place on June 1st.

Pupils were “appropriately punished”

The incident was picked up by the school management and discussed with the students. The parents are also informed. “You stated that you didn’t do it out of political conviction,” says Preti. Nevertheless, they were “appropriately punished” and the events were processed.

It’s normal at this age for incidents to happen from time to time. “But it was the first incident of this kind at the school,” says Preti.

Since the independence of Kosovo in 2008, there have been repeated tensions with the Republic of Serbia. Riots recently broke out because the Serb population of northern Kosovo protested against the assumption of office by several Albanian mayors. Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic replied that Serbian military on high alert.
