Tangier: after its conversion, the former wholesale market will become the largest exhibition center in the region

A prize-giving ceremony for the three winning projects of the ideas competition relating to the reconversion and rehabilitation of the former wholesale market of the city of Tangier was held this Thursday, March 24, 2022, at the headquarters of the wilaya of the Tanger-Tetouan-Al Hoceima region.

The former wholesale market of Tangier will soon be converted into a large hall housing an exhibition center, a food court, artists’ studios and two conference rooms. It will be surrounded by a multifunctional open-air space (cinema drive, open-air exhibitions, car park, etc.), a space dedicated to living art associations, a platform for exchange and discovery, a circus, open-air bleachers, all this open onto the large esplanade. Delivery and parking spaces are also planned over a total area of ​​5.3 hectares.

And it is the wali of the Tangier-Tetouan-Al Hoceima region, Mohamed Mhidia, who chaired this Thursday, March 24, a prize-giving ceremony for the three winning projects of the ideas competition for the rehabilitation of the old wholesale market in the city of Detroit in the presence of the governor of the province Fahs Anjra, Abdelkhalaq El Merzouki, the president of the council of the region, Omar Moro, the director general of the Agency for the promotion and development of the North (APDN ), Mounir El Bouyoussfi, as well as the president of the regional council of the order of architects (CROAT), Mokhtar Mimoun.

Launched last January by the APDN, in partnership with the CROAT, this competition, in which around ten architects participated nationwide and whose jury is made up of the APDN, the wilaya of the TTA region, the he urban agency of Tangier, the CROAT and the regional conservation of heritage, aimed to rehabilitate the market in order to propose developments adapted to current use and to include it in the urban planning and socio-cultural environment of the adjacent population.

The competition jury thus examined all the files on 3 commissions and selected 3 groups in the following order.

Groupement 1 : Adil Abadi (Casablanca) – Hicham Khattabi (Tanger)

Groupement 2: Hanae Bekkari – Zineb Alami – Med Adil Lebbar (Tanger)

Group 3: Mohamed Azouzi (Casablanca) – Hicham Zekri (Tangier)

The winning group will have the task, in addition to the design, monitoring and control of the conversion works and the rehabilitation of the old wholesale market of Tangier located in the Bni Mekada district. The conversion project will require an estimated budget of 60 million dirhams.

The new exhibition center will be the first facility of its kind in the city of Tangier and the largest in the northern region. It will be able to accommodate many major events thus bypassing all the logistics of installing temporary marquees which depend on climatic conditions.
