UNUSUAL – Far from the playful and adorable image we are used to seeing, an American had a memorable experience with a particularly violent otter. On September 20, while quietly feeding the ducks that inhabit the pond, outside his house, Joseph Scaglione was savagely attacked by an animal.

Residing in Jupiter, Florida, the retiree is used to feeding birds to relax. But that day, the ducks and geese were not quiet and began to disperse, leaving Joseph to see another animal.

He explains to the media WPBF-TV à Palm Beach that he saw a “brown head protruding from the bank of the pond. ». Joseph did not immediately realize what animal it was. “At first I didn’t know it was an otter. » he said. Once aware of the potential danger that the animal represented, he then began a slow and careful walk to his house without taking his eyes off the mammal. Unfortunately, the otter attacked him before he could get completely safe.

Joseph Scaglione fell backwards and was bitten on the arms, hands and legs around forty times. The American managed to escape suffering terribly, particularly in his little finger, an area he describes as ” the worst “ in terms of pain.

The otter carried rabies

Joseph Scaglione is not the only victim of the Palm Beach otter. A little later in the day, the animal allegedly attacked the dog of a couple who came for a walk with their baby, still in the same neighborhood.

Thanks to the help of the neighborhood, the otter was captured. The 3-year-old animal tested positive for rabies on Saturday, September 23, according to a Press release health authorities.

“The Florida Department of Health laboratory has confirmed that an otter in Palm Beach County has tested positive for rabies. »

Since rabies is a fatal disease for both animals and humans if left untreated, the animal was ultimately euthanized. Following this incident, the authorities recommend total vigilance towards local wildlife, including domestic animals in the neighborhood.

Joseph Scaglione was taken into care and received treatment for rabies.
