Thank you is not enough! Kochi Corporation without paying lawyer fees; Lawyers sought refuge in court

Kochi: Lawyers have approached the High Court for the fees due for arguing the case on behalf of the corporation. Officials are undeterred despite having to pay lakhs in lawyer’s fees.
Earlier this year, a group of lawyers had filed a writ petition in the High Court seeking settlement of the fee arrears. The lawyers allege that the corporation officials are not even ready to submit a counter affidavit in this regard.
The petitioners say that the corporation, which had promised to pay the fee immediately after the court’s order to pay the dues immediately, cheated them again by not paying the full amount. The aim was to avoid contempt of court proceedings. Meanwhile, the Corporation was ready to pay the fee by hand when the lawyer who was previously a standing consul turned into a judge.
Lawyers appearing for notices, warrants and contempt of court against the officers of the corporation have been going to court for months seeking mercy from the same officers. No matter what the corporate governance comes, the position of the officers will not change. It is estimated that around 50 lakh rupees are to be received by various lawyers in fees.
