In the footsteps of film villain Orson Wells in “The Third Man” – Special attention to environmental education

Vienna (OTS) The Viennese canal network was a filming location for the cinema classic “The Third Man”, which premiered in London in 1949. From now on, those interested can dive back into the sewers to the original locations. They gain insights into the film world of yesteryear and into the day-to-day work of Wien Kanal employees today. “The 3. Mann Tour” in the canal has around 19,000 visitors every year and is a highlight for guests from all over the world and for the Viennese themselves,” says City Councilor Jürgen Czernohorszky.

The tour starts opposite the Café Museum in the Esperantopark on Karlsplatz. The entrance is marked by an oversized red concrete duct lattice with illuminated letters “3. man tour”. They point the way down seven meters – into Vienna’s underground. Sewer workers lead 50 minutes with exciting stories and amazing facts through what is now a modern sewage system in historic walls.

Particular attention is paid to the conscious handling of the waste water systems. The employees of Wien Kanal fish 20,000 kg of rubbish out of the underground pipes every day – rubbish that has no place there. “In Vienna we have an extremely well-developed range of options for proper waste disposal, the sewer and toilet don’t have to be used as garbage cans. We can all make a contribution to climate protection here. My request to every Viennese is: Don’t flush the garbage!”, says Czernohorszky.

Great film history in Vienna

The 3. Mann Tour” combines information about technological innovations with great (film) history. Scenes from the thriller “The Third Man”, which depicts gloomy post-war Vienna, were shot in November 1948 in the so-called cholera canal under Karlsplatz. The entrance is probably also the most famous manhole cover in the world. The chase of Orson Wells aka Harry Lime on the cinema screen not only made the Viennese sewerage system well known. Only three bars of zither music are still enough to recognize the third man melody. The music was penned by the Viennese wine tavern musician Anton Karas and helped him achieve world fame. The film cast is still impressive: Joseph Cotten, Orson Welles, Alida Valli, Anni Rosar and Paul Hörbiger play in the thriller, which by the way is still regularly shown in Vienna’s Burgkino.

Museum, cinema and walk

To get in the mood before the “3. Mann Tour” in the canal, we recommend a visit to the BURGKINO, where the thriller is shown regularly two to three times a week. Dates: www.burgkino.at/movie/third-man

Just a stroll from the canal across the Naschmarkt, at Pressgasse 25 in the 4th district, is the largest private collection of the film “The Third Man”. The THIRD MAN MUSEUM is a contact point for those interested in film and a door opener to Vienna’s post-war history. Special exhibition 2023: “Vienna 1945 – Zero Hour”. Opening hours: www.3mpc.net

Carol Reed’s film classic is not only set in Vienna’s canal system. The approximately two and a half hour tour of WALK follows Harry Lime’s footsteps on the cobbled streets of Vienna. The most important film locations are visited, stories are told about the film and reports are given of the “other” post-war Vienna – war ruins, occupation, the black market and East-West espionage.

From the canal to the Ferris wheel

There is a cooperation for the first time with the Wiener Riesenrad. The scene in which Holly Martins speaks for the first time with Harry Lime, who was believed to be dead, was filmed at the Viennese landmark, which was put back into operation in 1947. With each ticket for the sewers, visitors* of the canal tour receive a discount voucher for a ride on the Ferris wheel. Instead of 13.50 euros, you only pay 12.00 euros for the unforgettable experience high above the rooftops of Vienna.

Other cooperation partners of the “3. Mann Tour” offer interesting offers, all information on the Vienna Canal website www.drittemanntour.at.

Wien Kanal – The sewage professionals

With a pipeline length of around 2,500 kilometers, Wien Kanal is Austria’s largest sewer network operator. Around half a billion liters of waste water are transported safely and in an environmentally friendly manner to the main sewage treatment plant in Simmering every day. Around 420 employees ensure that the sewer network is kept clean and functional. For example, 20 tons of deposited material is cleared from the sewers every day to guarantee the flow to the sewage treatment plant. 99.8 percent of all households in Vienna are connected to the municipal sewage system. Nevertheless, the Viennese sewer network is growing by around ten kilometers every year. More than 1,800 sewer construction sites are carried out every year to maintain and repair the public sewer network.
