The Archive and the National Library concluded its cultural season 2022 with its national symposium: “Abu Dhabi, the pearl of cities between the past and the present.” In an archival journey with historical documents, pictures and plans that reflect the features of the city in the past and present, the light was shed on “Abu Dhabi”, the capital of the United Arab Emirates, and the transformations and developments it witnessed. Since 1962, after the development of its first structural plan, and the development it witnessed under its great leaders, the face of the earth changed from a dark yellow to a bright green, in which it enjoyed progress and prosperity until it became one of the model cities in the world.
The lecture began with the words of the founder and builder, the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, may God rest his soul in peace: “The desert has taught us to be patient for a long time until goodness grows, and we must be patient and continue the construction process until we achieve good for our country.”
In the words of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the State, may God protect him: “The generation of parents and grandparents suffered all kinds of difficulties in order to provide means of a decent life for their children and grandchildren under difficult circumstances that taught them that work and giving are worship, and that the Creator Almighty does not waste the effort of a committed servant.” towards his land and his people.”
The symposium, which was delivered by Eng. Asaad Hussein Al Abbas, an information expert at the Spatial Data Department in Abu Dhabi Municipality previously, gave a general description of the city of Abu Dhabi in the sixties, when its population was small, and its most prominent features were the Al Hosn Palace, the old market, the municipality building, a number of buildings and the Palace Hotel. Al Ain, the Beach Hotel, the customs building, the ADMA company, and others, such as the mosque and the church, which confirm the tolerance that prevailed in Abu Dhabi since ancient times, indicating that simplicity, kindness, and compassion are the most prominent features of Abu Dhabi, past and present, then the lecturer indicated that the plans that were drawn up to develop the city of Abu Dhabi were presented to Their Highnesses Sheikhs in the city of Al-Ain, and as for the detailed plans, they were presented to a specialized company before he took over the planning department himself.
The symposium returned the credit to its owners, when it confirmed with proofs and evidence that Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan was the chief planner of the capital of the Union. He was far-sighted as he rushed in a race against time to change the features of the Emirate of Abu Dhabi. To achieve the great aspirations of his people, he expressed in 1964 his desire and ambition for the establishment of the Union.
Under the leadership of Sheikh Zayed, Abu Dhabi began to be filled with residences, towers, and tall buildings. Ports, airports, markets, commercial centers, mosques, schools, universities, hospitals, and health centers were established there. His goal was to make his people happy.
The lecturer talked about six stages of the development of the Emirate of Abu Dhabi: the stage before the discovery of oil, which is a very long stage, the introductory stage, the establishment stage that began in 1966 when Sheikh Zayed took over the rule of the emirate, the planning stage under full government supervision, the horizontal and vertical urban expansion stage, and the Comprehensive Urban Planning 2007-2030, when the Abu Dhabi Urban Planning Council was established.
