En a trip to the site of the main Olympic and Paralympic Village for the next Milan-Cortina 2026 Winter Games, representatives of the Italian authorities involved in the project were able to be satisfied with the progress of the construction site.

Less than a year after a similar visit led by the Mayor of Milan, Giuseppe Sala, and the Vice-President of the Italian Council, also Minister of Infrastructure and Transport, Matteo Salvini, a new inspection has been orchestratedFriday December 29, 2023, in the presence of the Milanese city councilor, but also of the Minister of Sports and Youth, Andrea Abodi and the President of the Lombardy Region, Attilio Fontana.

Meeting the teams mobilized on the former industrial wasteland of the district Roman Portathe three men particularly noted the fact that the project remains three months ahead of the forecast schedule.

If this advance was slightly higher in February 2023the efforts made by the group COIMA SGR still allow today to perfectly distinguish the six residential buildings which will house no less than 1,330 athletes during the Games.

These buildings are in fact 90% complete, the structural elements and roofs still needing to be completed in places, without subsequently counting the fittings inside the various buildings whose construction meets environmental and environmental requirements. energy, with in particular the objective of achieving 60% renewable energy and a 40% reduction in CO² emissions with regard to the heating and air conditioning system.

The site – 18.7 hectares large – will also have to be planted with trees and vegetation, not to mention the renovation of an adjacent former industrial building which will house the athletes’ restaurant.

In finedelivery of the Village must necessarily take place no later than the end of July 2025, at which time the Organizing Committee will take possession of the site.

The authorities’ visit to Milan also concerned the construction sites of two other infrastructures which will this time host Olympic and Paralympic competitions in February and March 2026.

Here again, the Minister, the Mayor and the President of the Region were able to measure the degree of progress of the work relating to the preparations surrounding the transformation of part of the Exhibition Center of the Milan fair on the one hand, and on the foundations of the future MSG Arenain the neighborhood Santa Giuliaon the other hand.

It must be said that the second half of 2023 constituted a pivotal period in the implementation of these operations.

In fact, under pressure from the authorities and the organizers of the Games, the plan previously mentioned was somewhat modified, the Milan fair becoming host of the women’s ice hockey tournament and – this could still evolve – the para-ice-hockey tournament.

Initially planned to accommodate the International Radio and Television Center (CIRTV or IBC) and the Main Press Center (CPP or MPC), the Milan site will also welcome within it speed skating events, in an incredible soap opera.

Several pavilions must therefore be mobilized to allow the various competitions to take place, with concern for the comfort of athletes and spectators and the need to control costs.

Regarding the future arena in the neighborhood Santa Giuliaits development – planned independently of the Games – was significantly disrupted in light of the repercussions of the crisis on raw materials and the effects of inflation.

The latter resulted in a significant increase in the forecast bill from 180 to at least 270 million euros.

Despite these setbacks, delivery of the 16,000-seat enclosure – the largest capacity for a multifunctional enclosure in Italy – should take place by the end of 2025, just a few months before the opening of the Games. and hosting the men’s ice hockey tournament.
