Two explosions occurred on Wednesday as a crowd of people gathered at the tomb of Revolutionary Guard General Qasem Soleimani, who was killed four years ago, to honor his memory. Q. Soleimani was killed in a US drone strike in Baghdad in January 2020.
“The death toll from the terrorist incident reached 91 following two people, including a child, died of their injuries in the intensive care unit,” the official IRNA news agency quoted a local health official as saying.
It was the deadliest attack in Iran since 1978, when an arson attack killed more than 370 people trapped inside a movie theater in Abadan, southwest of the country, according to AFP archives.
The Islamic State (IS) jihadist group claimed responsibility for two explosions in Iran on Thursday. In a statement, IS said several members of the group “used their explosive vests” on the crowd at the general’s grave.
Iran’s intelligence ministry said on Friday that one of the deadly bombers was a Tajik national, while the identity of the second attacker has yet to be determined.
The attack led to the arrest of at least 11 suspects in six Iranian provinces, the ministry said.
The funeral of the dead took place in Kerman on Saturday, which was attended by Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi and the commander of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, Major General Hossein Salami.
Q. Soleimani was the commander of the Quds Force, the foreign operations unit of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC). In his own country, he is praised for his role in the fight once morest IS in neighboring Iraq and Syria.
