Today the SPD is once more in a situation like it was during the NATO retrofitting period – only it no longer has Helmut Schmidt. On the contrary: Olaf Scholz admits that he is prepared to be put under pressure by Putin. A guest post.

AWhen Russia annexed Crimea in 2014, in violation of international law, there was a brief moment of excitement in Germany. A little later, however, they returned to “business as usual” and gave Putin the green light for the construction of Nord Stream 2. The signal to Putin was devastating. Our actions signaled weakness and a willingness to ignore the security interests of Ukraine and all of Europe for our own short-term economic gain.

Have we learned from it? Do we understand that with our actions we send Putin messages that influence his actions? Who perhaps even encouraged him in the past to dare to fully invade Ukraine?
