The director was turned down, citing the fact that he was too inexperienced to film the classic. In addition, the plan had already been drawn up, but a coincidence helped here. The filming of one of the films was disrupted, and then it was necessary to “plug” the hole with something. And the officials remembered Mikhalkov.
He quickly chose actors for his team. One of them was Evgeny Steblov. However, he got into an accident and could not film. Nikita Sergeevich decided to replace him himself, especially since the celebrity’s costume suited him well.
Other artists also frayed the master’s nerves. Lyudmila Gurchenko, with whom Mikhalkov had long dreamed of collaborating, broke her leg and had to look for a replacement. Some refused for personal reasons – they were literally taken under siege. In any case, the director achieved his goal and made a movie worthy in all respects.
