The Disputed Dorra Gas Field: Iran’s Renewed Claims and International Border Negotiations

Dubai, United Arab Emirates (CNN) — Iran has renewed its adherence to its “rights” in the Dorra gas field, which is disputed with Kuwait and Saudi Arabia, which say that the field is an exclusive joint property of the two countries.

The Iranian Oil Minister, Javad Oji, confirmed the eligibility of Tehran’s position in the “Arash” or Al-Durra gas field, saying: “If there is no desire to reach an understanding and cooperation, Iran will put on its agenda securing its rights and interests, extraction and exploration for these resources, and it will not bear any responsibility.” A waste of her rights,” according to the official Iranian news agency (IRNA).

Earlier, Kuwaiti Oil Minister Saad Al-Barrak said that the Al-Durra field is considered joint property exclusively between Kuwait and Saudi Arabia only, and that whoever has claims should demarcate the borders, in reference to Iran, according to the Kuwait News Agency (KUNA).

Early this month, the Kuwaiti Ministry of Oil announced that the Kuwaiti-Saudi permanent joint committee “discussed accelerating the pace of work and achievements in oil projects related to the onshore divided zone, and the submerged zone adjacent to it.”

This was accompanied by official Saudi statements that considered, “The ownership of the natural resources in the divided submerged area, including the entire Dorra field, is (shared ownership between the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and the State of Kuwait only),” according to the statements of a source in the Saudi Ministry of Foreign Affairs, reported by the official Saudi Press Agency (SPA).

The source said that Saudi Arabia “renews its previous calls for the Iranian side to start negotiations to demarcate the eastern border of the submerged area divided between the Kingdom and Kuwait as one negotiating party opposite the Iranian side, in accordance with the provisions of international law.”
