Economic, social or even impact on the quality of life, a new study commissioned by the City of Geneva underlines the importance of the cultural sector. It shows that the creative fabric brings in nearly 2.3 billion francs to the canton, or 4.4% of GDP.
In full-time equivalents, the cultural and creative industries represent 6.2% of jobs in the City of Geneva and 5.4% of those in the canton, compared to 5.2% in Switzerland, according to the study “Les empreintes créations. Economie culturelle and creative Geneva”, carried out by the Zurich Center for Creative Economies of the Zurich University of the Arts. Figures down since the crisis due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
Aware of the richness of Geneva’s creative fabric, administrative adviser Sami Kanaan had commissioned a first study from the School of Management, he recalled to the media on Tuesday. Published in 2017, “The ‘weight’ of the creative and cultural economy in Geneva” quantified the added values of culture. It showed that one franc invested in the sector yielded about ten times more.
“Concerted approach”
The 2023 study is more qualitative than quantitative, according to Professor Frédéric Martel, its co-author with Christoph Weckerle. “It confirms the importance of considering this sector in its own right and the need to have a concerted approach with the canton. The issue is more structural and strategic than financial”, indicated Mr. Kanaan, in charge of the department of culture and the digital transition.
The study makes 26 recommendations to reduce the ecological footprint of the sector, regulate digitalization or even better integrate cross-border workers, international civil servants and migrants. The avenues for reflection also relate to the professional status of artists and creators, the importance of providing affordable premises in new neighborhoods and the ecological transition.
Some recommendations are included in the cantonal law for the promotion of culture and artistic creation, which should be adopted soon by the Grand Council, noted Mr. Kanaan. They will make it possible to work on the cantonal action plan, even if the City of Geneva can act at its level.
