The European Union condemns the violence in Brasilia and declares its full support for President Lula

The European Union has expressed its support for Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva amid unrest in the Brazilian capital, said EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell.

And Brazilian media reported that supporters of former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro seized the Congress building in Brasilia, where the police dispersed them with gas bombs.
The demonstrators also attacked the Palacio do Planalto, one of the official palaces of the presidency, as well as the Supreme Court building.
“The European Union condemns in the strongest terms the anti-democratic violence that took place on Sunday, January 8, in the heart of the government district of Brasília,” Borrell said in a statement. Adding that “the European Union reiterates its full support for President Lula and the Brazilian democratic system and expresses its solidarity with the democratic institutions targeted by this attack.”
Borrell said that political differences must be resolved within Brazilian democratic institutions and not through violence, and he expressed confidence that Brazilian democracy will prevail.
“Brazilian political leaders, especially former President Bolsonaro, must act responsibly and urge their supporters to return home,” Borrell said.
European Council President Charles Michel also condemned Sunday’s unrest in Brasilia.
