The government valued the hockey bronze at 576,717 euros

Earlier, the Ministry of Education and Science (MES) prepared a draft government decision to allocate 576,717 euros to the Latvian hockey team and federation, which is twice as much as previously planned.

According to the sports law, the Latvian men’s ice hockey team can claim a cash prize of up to 102,447 euros for third place in the final tournament of this year’s world championship, and the LHF can claim a cash prize of up to 106,716 euros for the development of the sport.

At the same time, according to the ministry, third place in the World Cup is a unique event, so the achievement must be assessed at the highest level.

It is planned to pay 220,000 euros to the players of the Latvian national team, their coaches and personnel serving the athletes for third place at the World Championships, and the federation will receive 356,717 euros.

Also, the cooperation agreement between the Ministry of Education and Science and the LHF will determine the purposes for using the amount allocated to the federation – 250,000 euros will be spent on training children and youth, and 106,717 euros will be spent on the development of hockey, with at least 50% allocated to the training of young athletes.

The money is supposed to be allocated from the state budget for unforeseen cases.

On May 28, the Latvian team finished the championship in third place, beating the Americans in the bronze medal match with a score of 4:3.

This was the most successful championship in Latvia’s history. Previously, the best achievement at the World Hockey Championship was seventh place, won three times.
