The Impact of Irregular Work Schedules on Health: A Comprehensive Analysis

Since the 1980s, the labor market has undergone significant changes. The growth of services, task automation and «gig economy» contributed to an upheaval in professional habits and an increase in schedules irregular.

In the short term, the effects of these on health are known. Lack of sleep, reduced alertness, anxiety, depression: all are caused by the desynchronization of the biological clock. Nevertheless, a new study reported by CNN suggests that these ailments could also manifest themselves in the long term.

The conclusions are scathing. “People with slightly variable or staggered work schedules more often reported a reduction in the duration and quality of their sleep, lower physical and mental functions, and a higher risk of presenting signs of poor health and depression at the age of 50,” explains Dr. Wen-Jui Han, professor at the University of New Yorkwho led this study.

An indicator of social inequality

Less healthy individuals were those who, between the ages of 22 and 49, started with a standard schedule (between 6 a.m. and 6 p.m.) before adopting flexible schedules. And the consequences are not the least, since they are greater to those of having been mostly unemployed.

The study also highlights the importance of inequality socioeconomic, since women and black people are over-represented among those most affected. According to Han, this result only points to “the intersectionality existing between employment model and social status”. In other words, less well-off people suffer disproportionately from the negative health consequences of staggered schedules.
