The king and queen took a walk in the Sablon before heading to the Cinquantenaire for the traditional fireworks

Unlike previous years, the King and Queen were able to enjoy a small walkabout this Thursday morning, but also this evening, in the Sablon district of Brussels. The sovereigns wanted to be as close as possible to the population.

The King and Queen arrived around 7 p.m. at the Sablon in Brussels, to the applause of the citizens and the music of the drummers. The royal family greeted those present, after two years of Covid. They had no longer had this possibility, the festivities being quite limited.

The sovereigns take the time: they discuss, they take photos because July 21 is both a holiday for our country and a celebration of our monarchy. And for citizens, meeting the royal family is quite symbolic. A symbol of cohesion but also a certain pride.

Philippe and Mathilde arrived without their four children, but they will join three of the four children – without Princess Elisabeth – at the Parc du Cinquantenaire where the fireworks will be held.
