The Russian Information Agency reported Monday, quoting Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova, that Russia has officially informed Turkey, Ukraine and the United Nations that it opposes the extension of the grain export agreement in the Black Sea.

The Kremlin had confirmed on Monday that the agreement on the export of Ukrainian grain, which expires at midnight, had “practically ended,” stressing that Russia was ready to return to it “immediately” when its conditions were met.

“The Black Sea agreement has practically ended today,” said Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov, adding, “As soon as the part related to Russia (in the agreement) is met, Russia will immediately return to the agreement on grain.”

The agreement, brokered by the United Nations and Turkey last July, aims to ease the global food crisis by opening the door to safe export of Ukrainian grain that was prevented by the Russian-Ukrainian conflict.

It has been extended several times, but its deadline is today. Russia has been saying for months that the conditions for the extension have not been met.

For its part, the German government called on Russia on Monday to extend the implementation of the Ukrainian grain export agreement.

Russia today accused Ukraine of attacking the Crimean bridge last night, killing two people.
