In Spartak history, red-haired coaches have a special place.

Guillermo Abascal’s work in Spartacus resembles the most brutal of all possible attractions. No one has ridden such an emotional swing before: fans see him either as a messiah or as a mediocrity.

The Spaniard attracts attention not only with desperate experiments with the composition and sometimes strange remarks in interviews. His appearance and, above all, hair color are a subject of discussion for many experts.

“A redhead on a team means good luck.”

The other day, Spartak student Pavel Pogrebnyak also did not ignore a striking topic:

– If a redhead is on the team, then it’s good luck. Seriously, there is a saying! They either want to remove Abaskal or leave him. I think that Abascal will calmly continue to work, because they played with Lokomotiv 1:1 in the minority and then beat Rostov and Baltika. With this, he concreted his place until the summer for sure,” Pogrebnyak noted in an interview with Metaratings.

Even earlier, Alexander Mostovoy found a connection between Abaskal’s hair color and Spartak’s results:

— There is a Russian proverb that redheads are often lucky. CSKA looked better. “Spartak definitely didn’t play enough to win, but CSKA did,” the Tsar noted immediately after the derby in a conversation with the “Championship”.

Alexander Grigoryan did not stay away from the discussion, talking about his attitude towards Abaskal on Match TV:

– I don’t criticize him, I have sympathy for him. In any case, any red-haired coach always arouses my sympathy, just like a red-haired football player. The red-haired player always has a place in my lineup,” said Grigoryan.

In a sports environment, having a red-haired player or coach on a team is welcome. In addition to the abstract motivation “for good luck,” redheads have very specific features that cannot leave indifferent, perhaps, the most demanding fans in Russia.

Psychologists note that hair and skin color can say a lot about a person’s nervous system. In the case of those with red hair, this is explained by physiological and psychological characteristics. Studies have shown that in most cases such people have a low pain threshold. As children, they are more likely to be diagnosed with ADHD—attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. There are also a number of advantages: redheads produce more endorphins (hormones of joy), they almost do not suffer from rickets and arthritis, and they also turn gray later.

Among all psychotypes, redheads are considered the least stable; they often lack anti-stress hormones, which can provoke stress and conflict situations. People with this hair color may seem calm on the outside, but in fact they have a groovy character. It is difficult to argue that such a characteristic largely describes Abaskal’s behavior.

Spartak did not become a champion without redheads

The topic of red-haired coaches and their influence on Spartak seems unexplored. But the most successful coach in the Russian history of the club at one time almost earned the nickname Red. Oleg Romantsev, while still a player, even had to repaint himself because of this. Alexander Tarkhanov, his friend and partner in Krasnoyarsk Avtomobilist, spoke about an interesting fact at the dawn of Romantsev’s playing career:

“He was a principled and stubborn guy. Interestingly, his hair color was reddish at the time. They even began to call him “red.” But he apparently quickly got tired of it, and he came to one of the next training sessions with black hair and dyed it, Tarkhanov recalled.

Romantsev probably retained this habit for many years. When he was a coach, he was rather brown-haired, although at the end of his career, in many photographs you can see the natural hair color of the coach, who led Spartak to the championship eight times.

Surprisingly, redheads are drawn to Spartak, although according to statistics, less than two percent of the planet’s population has this hair color. After Romantsev, Spartak managed to train five red-haired specialists at once!

The first was the Italian Nevio Scalla. He arrived in Russia already gray-haired, but in his youth he had fiery hair. He was replaced by the red-haired Alexander Starkov. These foreigners never managed to return the championship title to Spartak, but in 2017 Massimo Carrera managed to do it.

The Italian cannot be called 100% red-haired; when he was a player, he was more likely to be brown-haired. The favorite of Spartak fans painted over his gray hair, including using golden paint. This may have helped attract medals of the same color. Oleg Kononov tried to follow the same path, but in his case the sign did not work at all.

It turns out that Spartak has never become a champion without red-haired coaches. In 1996, Georgy Yartsev led the team to the title, but Romantsev was also part of the staff at that time and had a great influence on the head coach. It’s not for nothing that Nikolai Starostin liked to repeat that there must be at least one redhead in the team.

There is no such correlation in any other club. The only red-haired coach not from Spartak to win the title in Russia was Andre Villas-Boas, who won the championship in the 2014/15 season. The rest of the coaches wore different hair colors. It is curious that so far no blond has won gold:

Sergey Semak (brown-haired) – 5 championships Valery Gazzaev (brown-haired) – 4 championships Yuri Semin (brown-haired) – 3 championships Leonid Slutsky (brown-haired) – 3 championships Luciano Spalletti (bald) – 2 championships Kurban Berdyev (bald) – 2 championships Georgy Yartsev (brown-haired) – 1 championship Dick Lawyer (brown-haired) – 1 championship

It seems that the leaders of Spartak keep amazing statistics in mind. Abascal very quickly managed to achieve maximum trust from the bosses, and even at the most critical moments the question of his resignation was not raised. Perhaps the behest of the club founder will work in the case of the red-haired Spaniard.
