June 22 NASA Parker Solar Probe probe for the 16th time approached the sun at an extremely close distance – less than 9.6 million km. At this altitude, the temperature of the solar corona reaches a million degrees Celsius. The probe’s 11.4 cm thick thermal shield allows the spacecraft’s scientific instruments to operate at a comfortable temperature of about 30 °C and collect unique data that could not be obtained otherwise.

Surprisingly, we still do not know the subtleties of the physical processes occurring inside the Sun. For example, even the best telescopes on Earth or in orbit do not allow us to collect complete data on the processes in the solar corona. The Parker probe draws information directly from the source, so to speak, fixing the places of origin, directions of movement and energy levels of charged particles leaving the Sun. In one of the past flights near the Sun, the probe was able to see how and where the solar wind originates, revealing the mystery of this phenomenon to science.

The scientific program of the probe is designed for 24 approaches to the Sun. Launched in 2018, the device should collect a lot of data that will allow scientists to better predict space weather, which will increase the reliability of satellite constellations, terrestrial communications and manned flights. We have yet to fly to Mars, and the success of the mission will also depend on the knowledge gained about space storms and calms.

In addition to the planned 24 dives into the solar atmosphere, the Parker Solar Probe was supposed to make 7 close flybys near Venus. He has already made five such flights and there are two left. A flyby near Venus helps the spacecraft perform a gravity assist, including some deceleration. Along the way, the device collects data on Venus, which will never be superfluous. On August 21 of this year, Parker will approach the Morning Star for the sixth time, and the 17th approach to the Sun will take place on September 27.
