The regional governor of Western Greece, Nektarios Farmakis, will go to China, and specifically to the city of Hangzhou, which is located near the international trade center of Shanghai, from tomorrow until Thursday, February 29.

The district governor will be accompanied by the legal advisor Panagiotis Tsakanikas and the director of the Institute of Industrial Systems, Professor Chrysostomos Stylios and will sign a memorandum of cooperation with the mayor of the city and other agencies, in an official ceremony.

The metropolitan city of Hangzhou is one of China’s most powerful commercial areas with the greatest growth potential and headquarters of giant companies in the field of e-commerce and technological products, (Alibaba Group, Ant Group, NetEase, Tik-Tok, etc.).

In his message, Nektarios Farmakis mentions about his upcoming trip to distant China: “Western Greece is constantly expanding the horizons of extroversion and cooperation, inside and outside Europe, taking advantage of its geographical position and strong advantages. We will go everywhere to put Western Greece at the center of developments.”

In digital transformation and innovation in sectors including but not limited to agri-food, culture and tourism and the creative industry.

In the field of digital commercefocusing on talent development and the incubation of small and medium-sized enterprises.

In the field of renewable energy sourcesincluding but not limited to photovoltaic energy, wind energy and energy efficiency, thereby contributing to regional climate goals and Sustainable Development goals.

In the fields of culture, sports and tourismincluding, but not limited to, inter alia, international sporting events, exchange and promotion of culture and tourism.

It should be noted that there have been extensive consultations in order to determine the fields of cooperation and the validation of bilateral cooperation.

The cooperation framework began to take shape from 2021, when the Region of Western Greece joined, at its request, the international program International Urban Regional Cooperation (IURC), together with other regions and cities from Europe, Asia, America and Australia with the aim of developing cooperation networks in areas of common interest.

After two years of technical meetings, exchange visits and know-how with Chinese cities and regions and with the support of the program for the implementation of the EU-China regional policy cooperation, the Western Greece Region and the city of Hangzhou, China, agreed to cooperate.

In addition to what was mentioned, the two parties will carry out specific joint actions that will lead to visible results and will jointly facilitate exchange and cooperation between the Patras Science Park, the Institute of Industrial Systems (INVIS) and the Hangzhou Chengxi Sci-Tech Innovation Corridor, including but not limited to mutual visits, pilot projects, education and training, entrepreneurship and creation of jobs, after negotiation and agreement.

The cooperation between the Region of Western Greece and the city of Hangzhou will be ratified with the signing of a Cooperation Agreement in an official ceremony in the context of the High Level Seminar on Urban and Regional Policy from February 25 to 29 in Taikang City.
