By leading to a forced suspension of economic activity, the Covid-19 pandemic has brought the world into a new era, that of the subsidized economy. What was supposed to represent only a parenthesis became long-term following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine: weapons, medicines, semiconductors, renewable energies… Everything that is judged more or less strategy by a country is now a pretext for public support which amounts to billions.

Is the development of electric cars? Looking at the sums that are now injected into public-private partnerships in Europe and the United States to build battery factories, we can deduce that yes. And it is very possible that Beijing decided this before its international competitors. In any case, this is the suspicion that torments Brussels. The European Union (EU) announced last Wednesday the opening of an investigation against China for the “massive subsidies” it allegedly granted to its manufacturers. Now feeling cramped in their domestic market, companies such as BYD are now turning to exports and are accused of undercutting prices on the European market.
