The Role of Extremism in Belgian Politics and Media: Insights from Denis Ducarme and Other Political Figures

To debate it, the public service channel invited the writer David Van Reybrouck, the political scientists Nathalie Brack (ULB) and Francois Debras (ULiège), the mayor Philippe Close (PS) and the deputies Saskia Bricmont (Ecolo), Denis Ducarme (MR) and Marc Botenga (PTB). It was the presence of the latter that posed a problem for the elected liberal.

”To comment on the development of the far-right, RTBF invited a PTB deputy. I said on set that I didn’t understand why,” reports Denis Ducarme. “Inviting one extreme to talk about another extreme seemed like a farce. I was very surprised to find myself on the set with a communist deputy. From my point of view, they are just as dangerous as each other. For me the extreme right and the extreme left are different sides of the same poison.”

To those who distinguish between the two radicalities, the MP responds that “the far left threatens democracy and freedom” and that it is growing in power as much in Europe as the hard right. “Communism means 100 million deaths in the world.” Let us remember that Denis Ducarme has long called for the application of a cordon santé around the PTB.

Paraphrasing a poem by Rudyard Kipling, he says he finds it curious to put “these liars and these monsters on the same front” on the same footing. The former federal minister, however, specifies that he is not throwing the baby out with the bathwater: “Julie Morelle’s team does high quality work”.

”Basically, I find it to be a quality program, with well-constructed expressions and a good journalistic approach. This invitation allowed me to say that if there is no extreme right in French-speaking Belgium, unlike France, the Netherlands, Germany or Flanders, it is because the MR dared to take sides on sometimes sensitive issues such as security, immigration or communitarianism,” comments Denis Ducarme.

Denis Ducarme torpedoes Magnette on the sanitary cordon: “No lessons to learn from someone who almost brought the PTB into a majority!”

Carolo details his thoughts. The MR goes from the center to the right, with “popular, conservative, social liberal” profiles within it. The Reformers take up “important themes”, but that is not enough. “I am convinced that if the extremes are developing, it is because certain parties are hiding their faces on themes which are not far-right but which the far-right uses. Traditional parties must come to grips with these themes with a nuanced response. This is how we block the way to the extremes.”
