The salary levels of the ZDF star presenters had previously been kept strictly secret. Comedian and presenter Oliver Welke earns around 1.18 million euros per year, Johannes B. Kerner earns 630,000 euros and “ Fernsehengarten” presenter Andrea Kiewel receives 400,000 euros annually. Science journalist Mai Thi Nguyen-Kim is paid an annual salary of 349,000 euros, Giovanni Zarrella is paid 300,000 euros and Jan Böhmermann, whose salary was previously revealed, is paid 651,000 euros plus VAT.
The fees of other prominent ZDF faces were also revealed: Maybrit Illner with 480,000 euros per year, Marietta Slomka with 393,750 euros, Rudi Cerne with 382,000 euros and “Heute Journal” presenter Christian Sievers with 350,000 euros.
In Germany, a monthly broadcasting fee of 18.36 euros is charged per household. The Cologne Institute for Media Policy (IfM) calculated that the nine ARD broadcasters, ZDF and Deutschlandradio together had financial resources of around 10.027 billion euros in 2023, with ZDF accounting for 2.5 billion euros.
