The increase was even “dramatic” according to the report of the journal “Annals of Internal Medicine”. A first case was detected in the United States in 2016 and would be present in 30 countries today. There were 1,471 cases in 2021.
“We have seen an increase not only in areas with ongoing transmission, but also in new areas,” said Dr Meghan Lyman, Chief Medical Officer for Fungal Diseases. In 2022, there were 2,377 cases.
It “represents a serious threat to global health” according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). It would probably be caused by global warming. It is capable of causing serious illnesses and therefore weakening your immune system: “This is an infection that occurs in extremely ill people who usually suffer from many other problems”.
However, people won’t turn into infected like in the video game and the series.
