The start of the sugar beet cultivation operation in the Gharb for the 2023-2024 agricultural campaign was given on Monday in the rural commune of Tekna, in the province of Sidi Kacem.

The start of this operation, initiated in a context marked by the challenge of rationalizing the exploitation of water resources, took place on a farm equipped with a localized drip irrigation system, in the presence notably the Governor El Habib Nadir, the general director of the Cosumar Group, Hassan Mounir, the president of the Regional Chamber of Agriculture of Rabat-Salé-Kénitra, El Bouyahyaoui Mohammed, the regional director of Agriculture, Mahjoub Lahrache, the representative of the Crédit Agricole Group and several farmers in the region.

On this occasion, the director responsible for the management of the Cosumar sugar factories, Abdelhadi Hasnaoui, welcomed the action carried out by all the partners, namely the Regional Agricultural Development Office (ORMVA), the Chamber of agriculture as well as the Association of Sugar Beet Producers and all stakeholders in the sector to make the sugar cane and sugar beet industry a success.

Thus, it is planned to cultivate 15,000 ha of sugar beet and 3,000 ha of sugar cane in the Gharb, said Mr. Hasnaoui, adding that at the national level 54,000 hectares will be intended for the cultivation of sugar beet and 3,000 hectares for sugar cane cultivation.

On the subject of seeds and pesticides, he specified that no increase in prices was recorded compared to last year, noting that the subsidized price of fertilizers will stabilize at 240 DH for ammonitrate and at 330 DH for urea, which will, according to him, have a positive impact on the cost, which will see a drop of 4,000 to 5,000 DH/ha compared to last year.

Regarding sugar cane, he cited the Recovery Plan involving support estimated at 8,000 dirhams/ha for farmers, and a set of measures such as the generalization of plant treatment techniques by drones, as that “novelty introduced this year, after having been tested last year on an area of 2,000 ha in the Gharb”.

The positive results recorded by this sector can be explained by the joint action of the State, the supervisory department, the Cosumar Group and the Interprofessional Sugar Federation, he further indicated.
