A Reunion Island woman named Elodie went to Belgium this summer to be euthanized following a medical error during an operation.
The pain was so intense that she preferred to die.
According to the newspaper ParisianElodie, a forty-year-old from Reunion, had a vaginal prosthesis fitted 4 years ago without her consent.
A medical error which made this mother experience martyrdom.
It all started in 2010 with the birth of her first child. The birth left the Reunion woman with significant after-effects, including a deep tear in the perineum. When her second child was born, four years later, the pain returned.
From there, the mother consulted a doctor in the Paris region who strongly recommended an operation. Reassuring her about the benign aspect of the operation, Élodie accepts.
A medical error
Except that once the operation is over, violent pain occurs. In the Parisian newspaper her husband explains: “She felt like her pelvis had been torn apart, like a collapse from the inside.”. The couple questions and inquires with the doctor who admits to having inserted a prosthesis vaginally, without warning her. “With what I did to you, you’ll never have a problem” he would have said.
Unfortunately the pain persists. And when she decides to have this prosthesis removed, the law in France prohibits the wearing of this famous prosthesis. Élodie and the other women filed a complaint for “unintentional injuries”.
Problem, the damage is done. And during a final operation with an American surgeon, the observation was clear: it was a real butchery inside.
A painful decision
Aware that no solution exists and that the pain will not go away, Elodie and her husband decide to let it go. He will explain in the newspapers that he had said these terrible words, “If you care about me and the children, you can leave… ”
This is how on August 23, Elodie and her husband flew to Belgium to be euthanized. To conclude, her husband will say that “it’s the first time” that he saw his wife at peace.
