The Theatricalization of Press Review: Adapting for Access to Information in Senegal

The “theatricalization” of the press review responds to a programmatic logic. It is an intelligent adaptation to the audience, without participating in the cretinization of society. Unfortunately, social networks take care of it.

Basically, this way of delivering news facilitates access to information for the majority of Senegalese people, who do not read the forty-nine daily newspapers, which appear every day in our country.

Purists, intellectuals and other elites like President Macky Sall may not like the press review, because they are simply not the target. It is not for nothing that the press review buzzes in the markets at all broadcast times. The informal sector obtains its information mainly through press reviews.

And this situation is correlated with the illiteracy rate in Senegal. More than 54% of Senegalese people cannot read or write French, the language in which newspapers are published. However, these illiterates have the same right to information as the intelligentsia. In indexing this journalistic genre, the President of the Republic mainly refers to the Wolof version. This shaping of information delivery answers three fundamental questions in journalism: Where are we talking about? Who are we addressing? How to make information digestible? Because, to inform, like to govern, is to know your people, the public in this case. The question is a textbook case. A vast learning field for trainers. Let’s not throw out the baby and the bathwater, not everything is bad about this way of doing things; as long as the “press reviewer” does not invent facts or distort statements.

In form, some reviewers » are more expressive than others, a little more measured, let’s say. But the ” theatricalization » or intelligent adaptation to the audience is a good thing, in the name of universal access to information.

However, the practice apparently is not to the taste of the head of state Macky Sall. In my humble opinion, the President of the Republic should rather be proud to explain to French-speaking colleagues the relevance of what he calls “ theatricalization ».

This outing frustrated the journalists who reported it. Following his (free) comment, Babacar Fall of the RFM received an avalanche of insults and threats. Unacceptable. We show him our brotherly support because hatred and violence must be unambiguously condemned, wherever they come from. That said, this disenchantment between President Macky Sall and the national private press is regrettable. But, like love stories, second terms usually end badly.
