The third largest prize in the US lottery
The jackpot of 1.580 billion dollars that was drawn this Tuesday in the Mega Millions is the third largest jackpot in the history of the United States. Before Tuesday’s draw there had been 31 rounds in a row since the last time someone won the top prize, on April 18.
During those rounds winners of $1 million or more were recorded in 28 states: Arizona, California, Florida, Georgia, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa , Louisiana, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Missouri, Nebraska, New Jersey, New Mexico , New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, West Virginia and Wisconsin.
Mega Millions is played in 45 states, Washington DC, and the US Virgin Islands. The jackpot for the next drawing on Friday, August 11 is reset to its current starting value of $20 million ($9.9 million cash).
How to play Mega Millions
Mega Millions drawings are held on Tuesdays and Fridays at 11:00 PM Eastern Time.
To participate in the draw, the player must choose six numbers from two separate groups. In the first group you must select five numbers from 1 to 70 (the white balls), while in the second you only choose a number from 1 to 25 (the golden Mega Ball).
It is also possible to select Easy Pick/Quick Pick, where a machine picks the numbers at random.
There are nine ways to win a prize, from $2 to the top prize. If no one wins the jackpot, the money is added to the jackpot for the next drawing. The overall chances of winning a prize are 1 in 24.

The Mega Millions prize for this Tuesday’s draw has reached 1.100 million dollars, thus becoming the third largest in its history. The $1.1 billion figure is for the winner who chooses to have the money delivered in annuities: 30 payments over 29 years. California The most populous state in the country, home to almost 40 million inhabitants –of which 39.4% are Hispanic, according to data from the US Census Bureau for 2020–, is one of those that does not charge state taxes to those who earn a lottery prize. In the previous draw, held last Friday, January 6, 577,630 tickets were winners, according to the callottery.com site. Nine of them matched four numbers and the Mega Number, earning $16,259 each, before taxes.

Florida Florida, home to nearly 21.7 million people (of whom 26.8% are Latino), also does not charge state taxes on lottery prize winners. The flalottery.com page reported that in the most recent drawing, some 306,345 tickets were awarded and, among them, there were eight that won $10,000.

New Hampshire If you are one of the almost 1.4 million inhabitants of this state -of which, 4.4% of the population is of Hispanic origin-, and you bought a Mega Millions ticket, you will not pay state taxes if you happen to be the lucky person to win the jackpot. In the last Mega Millions drawing, there were no winners of more than $10,000 in New Hampshire, but on Tuesday, January 3, one person won $40,000, while another won $10,000, according to information from local broadcaster WMUR.

South Dakota The state that is home to Mount Rushmore, as well as nearly 900,000 people (4.6% of Hispanic origin) also does not charge state taxes to sweepstakes winners. In the drawing on Tuesday, January 3, one person won $4 million, according to lottery.sd.gov. The ticket was sold in Rapid City, the second most populous city in the state, second only to Sioux Falls.

Wyoming Wyoming is one of the states that most recently joined the Mega Millions, in 2014. It is only surpassed by Mississippi, which began selling tickets for this draw in 2020, according to the official Mega Millions page. And it is also one where no state taxes are collected. In this state of more than 570,000 inhabitants (of which 10.6% are of Latino origin), the largest prize ever won by a Mega Millions player was $5 million, in the draw held on March 23, 2016, according to the wyolotto.com site.
