This figure marks an increase in the number of potential victims of the anti-cholesterol food supplement containing red yeast rice and marketed by the Japanese group Kobayashi Pharmaceutical, which confirmed this report without giving further details.

On Friday, the pharmaceutical group announced that it was investigating five deaths and specified that 114 people, particularly suffering from kidney problems, were hospitalized in the archipelago.

A case of hospitalization in Taiwan which could also be linked to anti-cholesterol food supplements from Kobayashi Pharmaceutical was also reported last week by local media.

Kobayashi Pharmaceutical and Japanese health authorities are still working to identify which substance in the red yeast rice (called “beni koji”) of the food supplements in question could be the cause of the reported hospitalizations and deaths.

Sparkling sake, seasoning, miso soy paste, many companies are withdrawing their products

This affair has been in the headlines of the Japanese media for around ten days, also causing its share of misinformation and conspiracy theories on social networks.

The company, based in Osaka (western Japan), indicated last week that it had supplied its red yeast rice to around fifty companies in Japan, as well as two companies in Taiwan.

Kobayashi Pharmaceutical also said “to regret” that the company only communicated on the subject after mid-March by announcing the recall of three product ranges, even though it had received a first report from a doctor on January 15.

As a precaution, many companies have in turn recalled their own products containing this yeast, such as sparkling sake, salad dressing or fermented soy paste (“miso”).
