IA report claiming that the Slund government is offering money to foreign men who marry women from their country has gained much publicity. But what is the real story? According to a widely shared post on social media site Quora, the Icelandic government is paying $5,000 (roughly Rs. 4.16 lakh) to foreign men who marry their wives due to a shortage of men in the country. Also, the post claimed they would prefer North African men. Later, this post was widely shared on social media. Naturally many believed this to be true. However, the reports coming out state that this is only an online scam.

According to Snopes.com, a fact-checking website, several African websites published articles containing this information by the end of June 2016. One of the first sites to check this report is Spirit Whispers. After reading the reports, many of the men took it seriously and were willing to check the offer, according to reports.

Another website, Iceland Monitor, reported that many Icelandic women still receive friend requests from non-Icelandic men they don’t know. But Iceland’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed that the information was completely false. Another interesting fact is that not only is there not this low female-to-male ratio in Iceland, but the males slightly outnumber the females. Figures from the Information Division also indicate that over the past decade, men have accounted for nearly 50 percent of the country’s population.
