The UAE participates in the “Human Rights” meetings in Geneva

The United Arab Emirates will participate in the meetings of the 49th session of the Human Rights Council, which started yesterday and will continue until the first of next April. The first three days will be devoted to high-level meetings (February 28 – March 2, 2022), during which His Excellency Dr. Anwar bin Mohammed Gargash, Diplomatic Adviser to His Highness the President of the State, will deliver the UAE’s speech, in which he will review the country’s most important achievements in the field of human rights, and the prospects for promoting these rights within the framework of membership The current United Arab Emirates in the Human Rights Council. This session is of a special nature for the UAE, after winning the membership of the UN Human Rights Council for the period 2022-2024, an achievement that expresses the extent of international appreciation and respect for the UAE, its position and its prominent role in supporting human rights in its regional and international surroundings. The UAE has previously served as a member of the Human Rights Council for two consecutive terms over a period of 6 years in the period (2013-2018), as the term of office of members of the Council is three years, and they may not be re-elected directly after occupying two consecutive terms. The Council will consider organizational and procedural issues, the annual report of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights and the reports of the Office of the High Commissioner and the Secretary-General, and the promotion and protection of all human rights, civil, political, economic, social and cultural, including the right to development. The Council will address the activity of human rights bodies and mechanisms, and reports related to the universal periodic review.. While the Council continues to follow up and implement the Vienna Declaration and Program of Action, and issues related to racism, racial discrimination, xenophobia and related forms of intolerance: follow-up and implementation of the Durban Declaration and Program of Action. The tenth and final item on the agenda of the 49th session of the Human Rights Council will be devoted to technical assistance and capacity-building in the field of human rights.
