“The Uncommon Naming Tradition of a Belgian Family as They Embrace Their 13th Child”

A couple from Staden, near Roeselare, Gwenny Blanckaert and Marino Vaneeno, became parents to their ninth child a few years ago. Their family was unique in Belgium since all their children had first names with the same letters. In 2019, they welcomed little Xale, who joined his siblings Alex, Axel, Xela, Lexa, Xael, Xeal, Exla, and Leax. The couple had stated that they did not plan to stop at nine children. True to their word, during the pandemic, Elax (2) and Alxe (1) were born, and in April 2022, Laex became the 12th child. The parents had joked that their family would be complete with 12 children, but they welcomed their 13th child, Laxe, on March 16, 2023. The little boy’s name follows the same pattern as his siblings. Congratulations to the family!

A few years ago, we told you about Gwenny Blanckaert and Marino Vaneeno, a couple from Staden, near Roeselare, when they became the happy parents of a ninth child. Already at the time, Gweeny, Marino and their nine children did not form a family like the others since they had something that gave them a unique character in Belgium.

The parents never took the choice of the first names of their offspring lightly since all the nine children had first names with… the same letters. In 2019, little Xale was welcomed by his big brothers and big sisters Alex, Axel, Xela, Lexa, Xael, Xeal, Exla and Leax…

And at the time, the parents had recognized that they did not intend to stop there… And they had not lied. On April 30, 2022, Het Laatste Nieuws explained to us that the family had… 12 children. During the pandemic, Elax (2) and Alxe (1) were indeed born and, at the beginning of April 2022, it was Laex who became the 12th child of this sibling like no other.

“Yes, there are other possible combinations,” laughs Gwenny, interviewed by HLN. “But we always said that if we ended up with 12 children at the table, our family would be complete, so we will stop there”.

A 13th child

If they had assured after Laex that they were going to “stop there”, we learned this Tuesday, still via our colleagues from HLN, that Gwenny and Marino’s family has grown again. On March 16, the two Belgians welcomed their thirteenth child.

His middle name? Inevitably, the parents were no exception to the rule. The little boy is called Laxe and is doing well.

Congratulations to the family!

We congratulate Gwenny Blanckaert, Marino Vaneeno, and their unique family on the birth of their 13th child, Laxe. With all of their children sharing the same letters in their first names, this family truly stands out in Belgium. Despite their growing family, Gwenny and Marino have declared that they will stop at 12 children, but it seems that baby Laxe had other plans. We wish them all the happiness and love that their big and wonderful family deserves.
