Following a study carried out by researchers at the University of Leeds, 425 deposits of fossil fuels qualified as carbon bombs were identified, likely to emit at least one gigatonne of CO2 equivalent, or the equivalent of emissions in France for three years. Today, Thinnings et Data for Good launch the platform CarbonBombs.org to follow these projects and highlight the banks and companies involved. These extraction sites alone ruin the chances of limiting warming to 1.5°C.
Making complex and diffuse information understandable
To stay below this threshold, we should not emit more than 400 to 500 billion tonnes of CO2. However, the cumulative emissions of the 425 carbon bombs represent 1,180 billion tonnes of CO2, or more than twice this carbon budget. As in 2020, 40% of these projects, or 169 projects, had not yet seen the light of day, CarbonBombs was designed to attract the attention of political decision-makers and alert public opinion.
