They approve 64 new ones and now there are almost 11 thousand 2024-03-23 01:47:08

This week, another 64 new Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) received permission to operate in Cuba. By the way, the Ministry of Economy and Planning (MEP) revealed that with the most recent approved ones there are almost 11 thousand until now.

All those approved this time are privately managed companies. Most of them will be in charge of gastronomic services, passenger and cargo transportation activities. Likewise, they will allocate their activities to the maintenance and repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles.

For example, two of the recently approved ones will be responsible for classifying, distributing, transporting and delivering merchandise from abroad contracted to a state entity. Others, meanwhile, provide construction services, rental of homes, rooms and spaces. Likewise, they make clothing and footwear, do computer programming, and make feed.

The return of MSMEs

MSMEs urgently returned to the economic panorama of the Island to “try” to import everything that the state cannot, for various reasons. In September 2021, measures were approved that granted the possibility of creating a Micro, Small or Medium-sized company.

Cuban MSMEs are recognized as an economic unit with legal personality with its own characteristics. These businesses can be state, private or mixed.

For known reasons, these companies are not authorized to operate in prioritized areas such as health, telecommunications, energy, defense and media.

MSMEs, as economic actors on the Island, coexist with state companies, non-agricultural cooperatives and self-employed workers. Now there are, in total, 10,927 official businesses throughout Cuba.

Since their creation, MSMEs have not been exempt from criticism. For example, consumers in Cuba constantly denounce the high sales prices of products.

Another common complaint is that some only charge their clients in cash, an aspect that greatly limits their acceptance in neighborhoods and communities.
