They ask to process a project that reduces the specific tax on fuel by 50% – La Discusión 2024-04-04 14:04:34

After different experts warned that the price of gasoline could increase up to $60 pesos during the next 30 days, the deputies for the Ñuble Region, Cristóbal Martínez and Marta Bravo, who called on the Government – once again – to grant maximum urgency to the project that they presented exactly two years ago, and which aims to reduce the specific tax on fuel by 50% for a period of three months, as a way to financially support middle class families and entrepreneurs who depend of its use.

In this regard, both parliamentarians recalled that the initiative in question was submitted for processing on March 17, 2022, when the liter of gasoline was around $1,000 pesos, without its discussion in Congress having begun to date. For the same reason, and considering that in some communes of the country fuels have already exceeded $1,350 pesos, Martínez and Bravo described it as “urgent” and “indispensable” that the reduction – on a temporary basis – of said tax be evaluated.

“It seems that the Government and, specifically, the Minister of Finance, forgot to support Chilean families in economic matters. Gasoline prices are reaching or exceeding $1,350 pesos in different areas of the country, and although experts have warned that another $60 pesos will rise in less than a month, we do not see any authority proposing a concrete solution,” the legislators questioned by Ñuble. , who along these lines recalled the help that the Executive granted to the truck drivers union in November 2022, when they promised to send a bill to stop the rise in diesel prices for four months, which allowed them to end the strike.

In that sense, both deputies explained that, if the bill they introduced two years ago is finalized, the liter of gasoline would immediately decrease by around $250 pesos, thus bringing fuel costs back to around $1,000. Therefore, they insisted on their call to the Government to evaluate this initiative, especially remembering that the increase expected for the coming weeks could also impact other services and products, such as transportation and even food.

“The current authorities have to understand that the constant and uncontrolled increase in fuel prices generates multiple impacts on Chilean families, not only because it is much more expensive for them to use gasoline, but also because food and a series of other services begin to rise. . Not to mention, also, the enormous impact suffered by entrepreneurs or those who work with their vehicles. For this reason, when we see that gasoline prices will increase by around $60 pesos in less than a month, it seems entirely pertinent to evaluate a solution that allows us to stop these increases, just as was done with truck drivers at the time,” reiterated deputies Martínez and Bravo, who finally explained that the project proposes reducing said tax by 50% for three months, although it leaves open the possibility of extending the benefit for another 90 days.
