The European Union, together with its member states and international partners, has expressed strong condemnation of the malicious cyberattacks launched by the APT28 group, allegedly controlled by Russia, against Germany and the Czech Republic.
Today, the Germany publicly shared its assessment of the APT28 breach of various German Social Democratic Party email accounts.
What Borrell says on behalf of the EU
At the same time, the Czech Republic announced that its institutions had been targeted in this cyber campaign. State institutions, agencies and entities in member states, including Poland, Lithuania, Slovakia and Sweden, have been targeted by the same threat actor in the past. In 2020, the EU imposed sanctions on individuals and entities responsible for the APT28 attacks targeting the German Federal Parliament in 2015.
It is stressed that the EU will not tolerate such malicious behaviour, particularly activities aimed at degrading critical infrastructure, weakening social cohesion and influencing democratic processes, in view of this year’s elections in the EU and in more than 60 countries around the world . The EU and its Member States will continue to work with our international partners to promote an open, free, stable and secure cyberspace.
According to iefimerida, the EU is determined to use the full range of measures to prevent, deter and respond to Russia’s malicious behavior in cyberspace.
The malicious cyber campaign shows Russia’s continued pattern of irresponsible behavior in cyberspace, targeting democratic institutions, government entities and critical infrastructure providers across the European Union and beyond as highlighted.
