They discover a new species of dinosaur in Brazil

RIO DE JANEIRO, (Xinhua).— Brazilian researchers discovered a new species of dinosaur, named Tietasura derbyianaon the coast of the state of Bahia (northeast of the country), as reported today, Saturday, April 20, 2024, by the state-run Agencia Brasil.

Scientists from the State University of Rio de Janeiro (UERJ) made the discovery.

This species of dinosaur lived in the Recôncavo Baiano. And it is the first discovery in Brazil of a dinosaur from the ornithischian group, a herbivorous species characterized by its beak-shaped snout and whose pelvis is similar to that of birds.

His name, tribute to a writer and a naturalist

The specimen was named Tietasaura derbyiana in honor of the novel Tieta do Agreste, by the writer Jorge Amadoand also to the geologist and naturalist Orville A. Derbyfounder of the Geological and Mineralogical Service of Brazil and one of the pioneers of Brazilian paleontology.

The team of paleontologists, coordinated by the researchers Kamila Bandeira y Valeria Galloboth of Roberto Alcantara Gomes Institute of Biology from the UERJ, analyzed fossils collected between 1859 and 1906 in the Recôncavo basin, in eastern Bahia. These materials were considered lost, but were recently found at the Natural History Museum in London.
