They launch the # TodosSomosResponsables 2024 campaign against child and adolescent sexual abuse

Asunción, IP Agency.- With the motto “The more you talk and listen to them, the more you care for them”, the 2024 edition of the #WeAreResponsible campaign was presented this Tuesday, which seeks to raise awareness and prevent sexual abuse and all forms of violence against girls, boys and adolescents.

The campaign is promoted by the Ministry of Children and Adolescents (MINNA) with the support of State and civil society organizations. Its presentation was attended by President Santiago Peña, the first lady, Leticia Ocampos, ministers of the Executive Branch and other national authorities.

The Minister of Children, Walter Gutiérrez, pointed out that during 2023, 6,079 victims of punishable acts against girls, boys and adolescents were assisted. In the case of sexual abuse, around 9 complaints were registered per day, of which between 90 to 95% of the cases occur in the child environment.

In turn, Leticia Ocampos, First Lady of the Nation, highlighted the work carried out by the Ministry of Children and Adolescents. “Child sexual abuse is one of the most painful realities we face as a Nation. It is an atrocious violation of the most basic and sacred rights of our children and adolescents. We cannot remain indifferent to this problem. It is our responsibility as a society to protect the most vulnerable and guarantee them a safe environment where they can grow and develop fully.”

He added that within the framework of the campaign “preventive actions will be carried out throughout the year with activations, talks, recreational and recreational meetings in public and private spaces with both girls, boys, adolescents and adults. Today more than ever we reaffirm that in Paraguay we are all responsible for guaranteeing the well-being and safety of children.”

The campaign has the cooperation of the organizations UNICEF Paraguay, Plan International, Children Believe, SOS Children’s Villages, the Yacyretá Binational Entity, the United Nations Population Fund, UNFPA, and the Punto Farma pharmacy chain.

Less child sexual abuse, more mistreatment

The campaign highlights the predominant role that society has in the denaturalization and prevention of all types of violence. Appeals to raising awareness in responsible reporting, through the corresponding channels: lines 147 Fono Ayuda of the MINNA, 911 of the National Police and 133 of the Ombudsman for Children; the area police station, the municipality’s CODENI and the Children’s Prosecutor’s Office dependent on the Public Ministry. May, month of struggle

Every May the new edition of the campaign is launched, remembering that on May 31 we commemorate, by decree No. 3219/2004, the “National Day to fight mistreatment, sexual and labor abuse of Girls, Boys and Adolescents” , in memory of the crime of Felicita Estigarribia; an 11-year-old tangerine seller, who was found dead at the foot of Cerro Yaguarón and with signs of having been sexually abused. A case that to this day echoes in the hearts of all of us who fight for the rights of children and adolescents.
