Maracaibo.- A herniated disc can cause pain, numbness and even weakness in the legs. It is a pathology treatable with medication, physiotherapy and, in the worst case, with surgery. The doctor Alcides Rincón, specialist in neurosurgery, presents a state-of-the-art method that reduces the risk of complications and increases the quality of life of these patients.
Rincón is the architect of the first endoscopic spinal surgery in Zulia state, a minimally invasive treatment that offers a speedy recovery immediate pain relief and a surgical wound less than one centimeter.

The operation was carried out on November 30, 2022, at the Dr. Pedro Iturbe General Hospital of the South, in Maracaibo. He chose the public health system because of his desire to place the state of Zulia on a par with the great specialized centers in the world.
“Historically, hernias have been operated through an incision in the spine of about three or four centimeters, from where some tissues are dissected, moved and cauterized until reaching the hernia. That is classic,” said the neurosurgeon in an interview with the whistle, in which he assured that this process is minimized with endoscopic surgery.
“It is a minimally invasive process, the wound is six millimeters. Unlike the classic procedure, the patient is discharged the same day, which means that he is completely ambulatory and can return to his activities within a week,” added Rincón, who did the training in Barranquilla, Colombia, with a surgical specialist. spine endoscopy.

Rincon stated that endoscopic surgery has more benefits than the classical procedure. He guaranteed that this new option annuls the hospital stay, since it is an outpatient procedure and eliminates the pain produced by traditional surgery.
He assured that the risk of complications is also reduced to almost zero percent, without infections and without lesions of nervous structures.

“It is something very advanced that is carried out in the main centers of the world. In Germany, hernias are operated on endoscopically, the same as in the United States and Colombia,” Rincón said.
He maintained that this is not a miracle solution for the problems of hernias, but in a couple of years “it could replace the traditional method of operating them.”
