Alfredo Sánchez Chacón, the ‘Galician Rambo’, upon his arrival at a trial in 2001.

Alfredo Sanchez Chacon, known as the Galician Rambo, who was on the run after being sentenced to 17 years in prison for killing a young man in 1996, was arrested this Thursday by the Civil Guard in Valdoviño (A Coruna). The arrest occurred after the fugitive, who had been stealing food from homes in the area for months, tried to enter a house in the Loire area through a window, where an older woman and her three children were. It was two of the sons who, upon hearing noises, discovered him and chased him at night while at the same time alerting another Civil Guard neighbor who lived a kilometer away. The third brother, Francis Fernandez, who remained at home with his mother, told Radio Galega how they managed to capture him: “My mother told them to let him go, but they went out to look for him anyway,” he said. “They saw him cross the road, and although they had him a little lost at one point, they followed him until they caught him.” The persecution, he recounted, did not last long. “Although he took advantage of the darkness to hide, he covered a very short distance, barely 400 or 500 meters.” Neighbors of Valdoviño next to the house that the fugitive was trying to access. Kiko DelgadoEFE The brothers, he explained, believe that Sánchez Chacón had been accessing his property for two nights. “We were suspicious that something was happening, because the dogs barked in the middle of the night”, but then “they stopped”, he explained. “He almost had them familiar after two days.” Together with a neighboring civil guard who was notified, they managed to immobilize him, until a patrol arrived. The arrest occurred around 00:30 hours. The escapee had stolen food from other houses in Valdoviño, which had alerted the security forces, who had been looking for him since the end of December in the natural park of The Fragas do Eume, also in the region of Ferrolterra. Sánchez Chacón had been on the run since March 2021, when he took advantage of a prison permit not to return to the prison of Monterroso (Lugo), where he was serving a 17-year prison sentence for killing Manuel Garcia Varela 24 years old, during the patron saint festivities of Count (Pontevedra). After the arrest, he was transferred to the hospital to be checked for the injuries that occurred during the flight and which were not significant, for which he was transferred to the Ferrol dungeons. He was discharged Son of a civil guard and with military training received in the Special Operations Battalion from Legion, Sánchez Chacón had already escaped from Vigo prison on one occasion.
