TICKET | Food Security: A Shared Responsibility

It is necessary today to sketch a precise prospective vision of food security in Tunisia for the years to come in order to face the transformations and challenges of the day.

Tireless efforts must be made to strengthen food security, which has become an important economic weapon that can lead to total independence in food production, especially agriculture. The various crises that the world has gone through recently, the Covid-19 pandemic and the Ukrainian crisis in this case, have had the effect of increasing the prices of raw materials, production costs, the transport of goods, the cost of insurance, thus affecting the price of food on world markets and creating a disruption in the supply of essential resources in a context of population growth.

Food security is a shared responsibility not just for governments, but for all stakeholders. It is therefore necessary to intensify exchanges at different levels of research to overcome the multiple consequences and risks of this problem, by exploiting modern technologies and scientific research, taking advantage of foreign experiences and proposing concrete development projects that can be implemented in the medium term.

Tunisia was heavily affected by the recent series of global crises. This situation has exacerbated long-standing structural weaknesses, leading to shortages and rising food prices and weakening value chains. Now may be the time for the country to reduce its dependence on imports and invest more in the agricultural sector. Cereals are currently a major component of the diet in our country. However, national production is now unable to meet the needs of the population. Climate change has put national agricultural policies to the test, accentuating drought, which requires rigorous management of water resources in combination with appropriate farming techniques to ensure food security. Food security, as a sustainable development objective, remains dependent on efficient and effective agricultural and food policies.

For years, recurrent food shortages in Tunisia have been growing at a worrying exponential rate.

The rise in the cost of living puts citizens in a difficult situation where they begin to make trade-offs in their budget, to the detriment of their food. Many even go without meals and are forced to consume low-cost products.
