Tours Schools Face Severe Closures as 70 Percent of Facilities Prepare for Thursday Strike Action
An inter-union strike call for Thursday, November 5, is set to severely disrupt educational facilities across Tours, with municipal data confirming that 70 percent of local schools will see participating staff, as reported by ici.fr. The interprofessional day of strikes and demonstrations targeting wage policies will force the complete closure of seven local establishments.
The municipality expects widespread disruptions across the school network based on figures released Wednesday, November 4. Seven distinct sites will lock their gates entirely for the Thursday session. Affected locations include the Ferry and Mermoz nursery schools, the Jean de La Fontaine, Mirabeau, and Rimbaud elementary schools, alongside the Pérochon and Rolland primary schools.
Catering Shutdowns and Minimum Services Across the City
Beyond complete closures, the strike action severely impacts school meal services. Twenty-four municipal canteens will remain shut throughout the day, split between ten nursery facilities and fourteen elementary dining halls.
To assist families facing sudden childcare hurdles, the City of Tours is organizing a minimum reception service across three designated non-residential leisure centers, known locally as Accueil Loisir sans hébergement.
Wider Disruptions Hit the Indre-et-Loire Department
Amboise reports that no school transport will operate on Thursday, while two institutions—the Ambroise Paré and George Sand nursery schools—face total closures with 100 percent of teachers participating in the strike. Partial closures affect the Jeanne d’Arc nursery and the Jules Ferry nursery and elementary complex, with zero food service provided.
“For children whose parents have not found a childcare solution, the City of Amboise is setting up a minimum reception service within each of these five schools,” the municipality stated in an official release.
Saint-Pierre-des-Corps anticipates localized disruptions, closing morning extracurricular care at the Pierre Sémard-Les sablons elementary school, the Jacques-Prévert nursery, and the Marceau-Paul Louis Courier nursery and elementary groups. A minimum reception operates at the Marceau-Paul Louis Courier leisure center from 8:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.
Additional adjustments are confirmed in Cinq-Mars-la-Pile and Nazelles-Négron, where local town halls are rolling out minimum reception frameworks to support affected families while maintaining standard canteen operations where staffing permits.
