YouTube Moved Subscriptions From the Bottom Bar to the Top

YouTube is rolling out a mobile app interface update on Android and iOS that removes the dedicated Subscriptions tab from the bottom menu bar, moving it to a header swipe gesture at the top of the interface while placing Shorts and Upload buttons in its place.

Google is pushing out a sweeping redesign for the YouTube application across Android and iOS devices that has left long-time users furious over lost functionality, Android Authority reported. The platform has spent recent months aggressively restructuring its mobile architecture around short-form video feeds and algorithmic exploration. The latest server-side rollout changes core menu elements that have remained stable for nearly a decade.

Subscriptions Banishment Sparks User Backlash

Users have flooded online forums with complaints about the removal of the Subscriptions tab from its traditional position on the bottom bar. Reddit threads document widespread bewilderment over the decision to relocate arguably the platform’s most critical utility tab to a top header swipe gesture. In its place, YouTube has elevated the Shorts and Upload buttons directly into prime thumb swipe zones.

Viewers who primarily use the service for passive consumption argue that retaining a prominent Upload button while hiding the feed of channels they actively follow makes little usability sense. Reflexive taps meant for the legacy layout now frequently launch unintended device features, destroying years of established muscle memory.

Category Filters Stripped From the Feed

Along with the menu restructuring, the update eliminates the familiar category filters that previously allowed users to isolate Unwatched, Today, or Live content. Viewers are instead dropped directly into an unorganized, algorithm-heavy feed populated by prominent interaction icons.

The sudden server-side switch caught users off guard, amplifying the outcry over a design direction that feels increasingly disconnected from audiences who open the application specifically to watch creators they deliberately subscribed to.

Workarounds for Displaced Android Users

Affected Android users can bypass the controversial layout by utilizing launcher app shortcuts to reach their subscriptions feed directly. This quick workaround restores direct access to the legacy feed while Google continues its wide rollout of the new interface across mobile ecosystems.
