A diving trip turned into a tragedy in Zeeland. Jan Gelan, a 54-year-old Belgian accustomed to diving, lost his life. “Boat repair was his true passion. That’s why he took diving lessons, to specialize in the repair and maintenance of boats underwater,” explains his friend, Bob Hollebeke, to our colleagues at HLN.
Jan went with friends to Lake Veere last week to go diving. But as the 50-year-old entered the water, he suddenly collapsed. Two ambulances rushed to the scene, as well as a helicopter. Rescue workers and passers-by tried to resuscitate Jan, but to no avail. He suffered a cardiac arrest.
