Kris, 52, and Ann, 50, are workaholics. This couple lives in Larum, in the province of Antwerp, where they run a fruit and vegetable store. An activity that takes enormously to fifties who spin the perfect love for 35 years and their first meeting when they were only two teenagers.

In this hyper-active life, Kris and Ann grant themselves little free time. “We play sports and sometimes we go on vacation,” explains the man at Belang van Limburg. Last Tuesday marked the couple’s 2023 vacation. “We were looking forward to our holiday in Tenerife,” adds Kris. A vacation that became Kris’s worst nightmare when it came to an abrupt end on Sunday.

While hiking about 17 kilometers in Guiá de Isora, Ann ran into trouble a kilometer from the top of the mount. “Without saying a word, she suddenly collapsed,” Kris told our Flemish colleagues. In a remote area, the man is unable to contact the emergency services and must make the difficult decision to leave his wife to seek help. “I put Ann in the shade and looked for the nearest cabin for help.”
“It wasn’t 44 degrees!”
Any help unfortunately came too late. In cardiac arrest, the Belgian died shortly after. If doctors suggest heat as a potential cause of death. “Ann was very athletic and into hiking, I am a long-distance runner myself. We knew very well what we were doing and we left prepared. We had also planned plenty of refreshments (…) It was not 44 degrees Celsius there, as they say now. It was also cooler in the mountains”, nevertheless nuance Kris who is not convinced by this thesis.
The man will return to Belgium this Thursday. He does not yet know when Ann’s body will be repatriated.
