Since the court ruling, all powerlifting competitions, a form of heavy athletics, have been banned in Minnesota. According to the court, the USAPL violated the human rights of trans women by deciding not to allow a trans athlete to compete in women’s competitions. Marshi Smith of the Women’s Sports Association “Icons”, a former world-class swimmer, however, sees all powerlifters in Minnesota discriminated against by the verdict.

The controversy over trans people in competitive sports has become part of a heated political debate in the US – with conflicting rules and conflicting legislation. Some states prioritize the protection of trans human rights, and many varsity leagues allow trans women in the women’s category.

Sometimes no school sports for trans people

This is exactly what is forbidden elsewhere. For example, in 20 US states, transgender students are not allowed to participate in school sports in the category that corresponds to their gender identity. The US government, on the other hand, wants to make such bans partially ineffective with a new law.

The powerlifting association USAPL is in a bind as a result. He’s breaking regulations elsewhere because of Minnesota’s ruling allowing transgender women to compete in the women’s category. USAPL represents 27,000 amateurs and had recently created a separate category for transgender people and people in powerlifting.

Powerlifting Association wants to go all the way to the Supreme Court

But the court called this segregation and separation. The association’s fairness argument that trans women have increased body and muscle mass did not convince the judge either. But federation chairman Larry Maile, a psychologist, stressed today that his federation wants to include and support trans athletes. But this shouldn’t mean that others shouldn’t be deprived of their chances.

The USAPL chairman announced that, if necessary, they would go to the Supreme Court. His association is apolitical, a sports association. “We are being forced to become activists,” Maile said. The controversy about trans people and sport in the USA has thus reached a new level of escalation, far beyond the borders of Minnesota and powerlifting.
