Marcelo Bielsa will not return to the Athletic Bilbao bench this summer, nine years after leaving the Basque Country. This Thursday, the eighth in La Liga formalized the return of Ernesto Valverde. The 58-year-old technician will start his third adventure on the Bilbao bench (after 2003-2006 and 2013-2017). This announcement was expected after Jon Uriarte’s victory in the election for the presidency of the Basque club last Friday.
Free since his ousting from FC Barcelona two years ago, Ernesto Valverde, who led the most matches as Athletic manager, was the preferred choice for Jon Uriarte and his challenger Ricardo Barkala. Inaki Arechabaleta, third candidate in the race for the presidency of Bilbao, wanted to enthrone Marcelo Bielsa.
During his two spells, Ernesto Valverde managed to win Athletic their first title in 31 years by winning the Spanish Super Cup in 2015. (With AFP)
