∙ Who is Aslam OM? How do you see yourself?
He is a person who likes traveling a lot, wants to travel a lot, and thinks that he should become a better person through travel. Native is Kannur. Working in Bangalore. He is an engineer. Traveling is my passion. Do travel related videos on Instagram and YouTube. Traveling has taught me a lot. There has been a club called On My Way for about five years. I recently went to Sri Lanka. The total cost to me including the flight ticket was Rs 24,000. I spent only ten thousand rupees there. There are many apps that help you travel on a budget. ∙ How did you get into traveling? How was the first trip? Can you share an unforgettable travel experience?
He traveled a lot during his college days. But recently I started traveling as planned. In the past, only the places remained in the mind, but now the sights, experiences and people seen on the journey are in the mind. Traveling to Sri Lanka was an unforgettable experience. Fifteen to sixteen kilometers have been walked in a day. It was a solo journey for ten to fifteen days. On the way back from the top of the mountain at a place called Nuwara Eliya, the police caught me and took me away. He had to sit in the city police commissioner’s office for four hours. They seized all the property I had. Nuwara Eliya was the site of IS conspiracy earlier. They mistakenly saw my name and beard and caught me.
I stayed in the hostel of a friend named Ryan. He is a musician. He sings songs for programs at the police station. So they came to Pulli police station and took me down. It was an unforgettable experience.
∙ Infrastructure development for tourists is underway in many places. What else is needed in this region for smooth journeys?
If you look at our country itself, you will see that there are not enough basic facilities not only for tourists, but even for ordinary travelers. An example is the unclean toilets in the railway stations. Many tourist centers visited by foreign tourists do not have basic facilities for tourists. In the beginning, everything goes well for a while, but after a while, there is a situation where these are not protected and get destroyed. People who come to these places are also seen destroying these facilities. If each of us has a commitment and responsibility towards nature and man, none of us will mess this up.

There is one thing we need to understand first. Without nature, there is no man. Sights like beautiful hills, mountains and waterfalls are very helpful in reducing the stress of our daily life. But eco-friendly travel has always been a talking point. We are told that vehicles and concrete buildings are bad for the environment. But we cannot imagine a life without all this. What is needed, then, is to find innovative solutions that do not harm the environment.
∙ What is your definition of a good traveler?
We live in a time where everyone travels. The role of social media etc. is not small in it. The new generation can understand that there is a lot to learn and realize through travel. When we come back from a trip to a place, we always remember how that country welcomed us and treated us. No matter how good a place is, all it takes is one or two misbehaving locals to ruin its name.
Traveling is a part of life. Therefore, happiness is not the only thing that comes to us during journeys. Like life, we will have to face many difficulties during the journey. A good traveler should be a person who is responsible to nature, society, people and culture. By understanding the surrounding environment, we should be able to copy the good things into our lives.
Today’s journeys often seem to be about educating others. There are trips to show people on social media platforms. There are people who travel to different places after seeing others travel.
Travels should help to change the narrow mindedness like keeping people aside in the name of religion, caste and politics and to realize that everyone is human.
