This is a measure that will make many travelers more serene. After discussions with the European Commission and the competent national authorities in terms of consumer protection, the Edreams ODIGEO, Etraveli Group and Kiwi.com groups have undertaken to reimburse customers who are victims of a flight cancellation within a maximum period of seven days. . This means that if the airline reimburses the agency or travel platform on time, the customer will be reimbursed in a maximum of 14 days, reports BFM TV.

Indeed, currently, airlines are subject to European regulation 261/2004 which determines that customers must “have the possibility of having their ticket reimbursed or of obtaining re-routing under satisfactory conditions”. In the event of a refund, this must be received within seven days.

Many brands involved

But this is spoiled when you take your ticket via a travel agency or an online platform. Even if the company meets the deadlines by reimbursing the intermediary, the latter may delay in reimbursing the customer. The new measure, which must be effective from this Friday, aims to solve the problem, by giving the same period of seven days to intermediaries, “which means that consumers should receive them within 14 days”, can we read in a press release from the European Commission.

Behind the Edreams group, ODIGEO hide the brands eDreams, Opodo, Go Voyages, Travellink and Liligo. Etraveli Group owns the brands Mytrip, GotoGate, Flybillet, Flightnetwork, Supersavetravel, seat24 and Travelstart. It is therefore a large part of the actors who will commit to respecting the deadlines.

“This action complements a previous dialogue with 16 major European airlines, at the end of which these companies committed to respecting the 7-day refund period and to refund more than 500,000 deposits that they had imposed on consumers following flight cancellations during the COVID-19 pandemic,” the Commission said.
